“Be My Neighbor Day” with Daniel Tiger at Russell Community Center in Lexington

Mister Rogers began each episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood with his simple signature question in song: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”  Daniel Tiger continues that tradition with a new generation. In a special “Neighbor Day” episode, Daniel learns that it feels good to be neighborly and that one kind act can lead to many. His first good deed starts a chain reaction of kindness all around the Neighborhood, resulting in the declaration of “Neighbor Day!”

KET partnered with our neighbors from the Community Action Council and PNC Bank to host an event at the Russell School Community Services Center. Being neighborly often means breaking bread together and we started the evening by doing just that. The local Cane’s donated food for everyone to share.

There were many fun community projects set up throughout the event. Families were able to design place mats and write cards for the elderly in the neighborhood. It was great seeing the kids take so much time and care making these items for their neighbors.

In another room, participants were asked to assemble personal care kits that would be distributed to hurricane victims and others in need through the American Red Cross.

The children really enjoyed story time with our guest story tellers that included Mayoral candidate Ronnie Bastin and Christian Motley, from Strive Together.

Some of the families spent a lot of time creating dog toys for the local humane society. By simply knotting lengths of fleece in a certain way, they could make inexpensive toys for the shelter pups to play tug with.

“Do something nice for your neighbor, do something nice for your friend.”

The local fire and police departments were on hand to answer questions and even give tours of the fire truck. The police couldn’t resist having their picture made with the cat of the hour, Daniel Tiger!
