English Language Day and EnGen

Did you know English is one of six official languages of the United Nations? The other five include: Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian. Each of the languages has a specific day set aside by the UN to celebrate them. English is celebrated on April 23.

Our world has become increasingly global in interest and multilingual in communication. The US has always been a melting pot of varying cultures, languages and influences but are we prepared for the future as more and more immigrants and refugees enter and make our nation their home?

Recent statistics show one-sixth of the American workforce is made up of people from other nations. It is predicted that future immigrants and their children born in the US will account for 90% of the population growth over the next four decades. English language learning has never been more important. The success of our educational and economic systems depend on it.  Many learners who study English as a second language take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as an indicator they can read, write, hear and speak English proficiently. This can lead to increased opportunities for education and employment.
