New and Notable resources to start the school year right

As you and your students return to school and settle in, KET’s educational resources will be there as a trusted source for complementing classroom instruction with high-quality videos, interactive activities and other engaging digital learning tools. KET resources are used in Kentucky classrooms every day. We’re proud to share a few of the new and notable resources available to you this fall!

Kentucky Field Trips

Two more videos have been added to KET’s Kentucky Field Trips collection on PBS LearningMedia. The field trip to the Falls of the Ohio goes out on the riverbank for a close-up look at the world’s largest exposed Devonian fossil beds. The field trip to AppHarvest takes students to the future of agriculture with a tour of one of the largest indoor farms in the world, in Morehead. These new field trips join KET’s recent field Trip to the Kentucky Capitol.

Social Studies Shorts

From the team that brings you News Quiz, this series explores social studies and civics topics here in Kentucky to the nation and the world. Episodes cover topics like the Kentucky legislature and how a bill becomes law and are accompanied by discussion prompts, vocabulary and a short printable quiz. New episodes feature the Kentucky Derby, civic duties, Kentucky’s geographic regions and the flag of the U.S.

News Quiz Season 38

Join other students across Kentucky and the United States for KET’s weekly current events show. Targeted to grades 4-8, this kid-friendly, interactive program features a 10-question quiz based on each week’s stories. Your students will stay up to date with state, national, and international stories. There’s something for everyone, from election coverage and technology innovations to inspiring artists and enchanting animals. The new season starts September 1 on PBS LearningMedia.

Social & Emotional Learning

Managing emotions and behavior is key to student success and a healthy classroom community. It can be challenging to teach social and emotional skills in an engaging way within the regular curriculum. One way to do that is through the arts. Social & Emotional Learning | The Arts for Every Classroom offers resources to help educators and parents understand emotional development and lead students in art projects that build those skills—projects that can be incorporated into almost any classroom subject.

Media Lab Workshops

Equipped with desktop computers, iPads, 3-D printers, a laser cutter, and a couple of green screen studios, the KET Media Lab provides learning experiences designed to teach students and teachers the technical skills to create media arts projects. This unique experience is enhanced with a tour of KET’s Lexington studios. We will continue to offer some topics virtually via Zoom. All of our workshops are free. Browse the list below to find a topic that is right for you and your students.

Young Writers Contest

Held annually, KET Education hosts a writing contest for emerging young authors across the commonwealth. We invite students in PreK through 12th grade to submit illustrated stories and students in Kindergarten through 12th grade to submit short stories, poems and graphic novels. Winners are selected and prizes awarded. Winning entries, read by the authors themselves, are featured on the contest website. The next contest will launch fall 2022.

On the Same Page

The KET Young Writers contest will offer another series of FREE, LIVE virtual visits with authors, artists, and creators who will share their inspirations, their processes, and their creative backgrounds. These 30-minute visits will occur in both fall and winter and will be targeted by grade levels. Author announcements will be coming soon, but in the meantime can view past sessions in our Young Writers Contest YouTube playlist.

Creative Writing Toolkits

Also from the KET Young Writers Contest, our new Creative Writing Toolkits supply classroom-ready lessons and activities to guide you in introducing and exploring Graphic Novel, Poetry, Illustrated Story and Short Story experiences into your learning spaces. With background information, printable templates, and active learning lessons, writers of all experience levels can explore, grow, and hone their skills. The Graphic Novel and Poetry toolkits are available now. All four toolkits are planned for a 2022 release.
