News Quiz viewers recommend favorite books

To celebrate Read Across America Day and National Book Month, News Quiz – KET’s weekly current events show for grades 4-8 – asked viewers to recommend books to us and their fellow students. From Percy Jackson and Harry Potter to I Survived and Little Women, the response was overwhelming! The book recommendations keep rolling in, but we’ve shared some of our favorites, so far, below.

I recommend Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor because the main character Cassie struggles with racism in 1933. The book is all about how she overcomes challenges and perseveres. It is an inspiring story for all and I hope everybody can read it.

Madison
Meadowthorpe Elementary, Fayette County

I would recommend Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter. [It’s] a book series about cats who live in clans in the middle of the forest and have to fight to survive. [In] every volume there are prophecies that get fulfilled, and it is very interesting to see how the cats survive

Scarlett
Spencer County Elementary

I would recommend Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan because it is an exciting book with lots of adventures and I think some people would really like it. If you like mythology or adventure then this is for you.

Liliana
Clays Mill Elementary, Fayette County

My favorite series is called Attack on Titan and has both an animated series and a comic book. My favorite characters are Armin Arlert and Levi Ackerman. Levi’s combat skills and cool character design stand out and Armins loyalty and smarts make him a good character. This series is extremely well written and I am inspired a lot by the [author] Hajime Isayama.

Avery
Ilima Intermediate School, Hawaii

My favorite book is Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls because the character, Billy, reminds me of myself. I have a love for animals especially dogs… It shows the love and dedication that a dog has for his owner.

Chris
Mason County Middle School

One book series I really enjoy is the Accidental Adventures by Jonny Duddle and C. Alexander London. The series are about two kids named Celia and Oliver (their nickname is the Couch Potatoes). Their parents, who turn out to be secret spies, have no clue that their kids have gone on an adventure of their own.

I am a big reader, so I had a lot of trouble picking a series to suggest. This one I loved and hope everyone else does to!

Kaylyn
Deuel School, South Dakota

I recommend Harry Potter because it is amazing how J.K. Rowling made the book come to life. I really enjoy Hermione Granger from this series because she is very smart. I think this is a great series because people act like they live the book by being sorted into their houses. I love this series and think you would too!

Jenna
Norton Elementary, Jefferson County

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott! I only started reading Little Women and I’ve already fell in love with the 4 girls. They’re all sisters. This book is perfect!

Gwendolyn
The Frankfort Christian Academy

I highly recommend the book series called Famous Five by Enid Blyton because I think the mysteries that the five kids solve with a dog are so well written. I love reading and when I got this book series, I couldn’t put the book down! If you love solving mysteries, then I assure you that you will feel like you are actually in the book! P.S: I am currently reading book number 12.

Arshiya
Maplewood Elementary, Texas

Emily Windsnap by Liz Kessler because it has so much emotion in it just makes me feel so happy and good. It’s about a mermaid that is a mermaid when she’s in the water and a human while she’s on land. I recommend it A LOT for girls.

Hallie
Goshen Elementary School, Oldham County

I would recommend telling people to read Diary Of an 8-Bit Warrior by Cube Kid because the main character is a villager from Minecraft and it is a really fun series to read.

Henry
Goshen Elementary School, Oldham County

I would recommend The Hardy Boys series to anybody who likes mystery books because they are thrilling and puzzling books. My favorite character is Frank Hardy, one of the main characters. Frank is smart, patient, and very verbal, like me. Many versions of the series have come out, but the authors all used the fake name Franklin W. Dixon, so the real authors of the books are even a mystery.

Joshua
Wright Elementary, Shelby County

I would recommend the book series I Survived by Lauren Tarshis because they teach us about history, and they are very interesting.  There are different characters every time. Each book focuses on a different disaster.

Adeline
Red Cross Elementary, Barren County

I would recommend The Farthest Away Mountain by Lynne Reid Banks. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I love how Lynne Reid Banks always leaves you on a hook at the end of a chapter. The book is so magical.

Ada
Riverside Elementary, Indiana

[I recommend] the Whatever After series by Sarah Mlynowski because every book is about Abby and her seven-year-old brother Johnna getting teleported to different fairytales because the mirror in there basement is magic.

Morgan
North Warren Elementary

A book that I would suggest would be Guinness World Records. They make a new one every year and it’s filled with people who work hard to beat people’s records. Some are dangerous, some are athletic, and some are funny. It has something for everyone in it!

Jobie
Rosenwald Dunbar Elementary, Jessamine County

I would recommend the book series called Geronimo Stilton by Elisabetta Dami. It is about a mouse who is a book publisher. The books are really funny and descriptive and has really nice pictures.

Giovanna
Little Chico Creek Elementary, California

I would recommend the book, Nikki On The Line by Barbara Carroll Roberts. This book is about a girl and her friend trying out for a basketball team with bigger, faster, and stronger girls. This was an inspiration to me to do better at basketball. But also for other girls that play basketball.

Amelia
St. Pius X, Diocese of Covington

I would recommend Dogman by by Dav Pilkey because it’s a long story about a dog who had to get surgery and the doctor stitched the dogs head onto a cops body, so the dog has to take the cops role as a cop. Dogman also meets a lot of new friends and [there are] a lot of bad guys in his books. He even meets a tiny cat.

William
Stanford Elementary, Lincoln County

I recommend Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne. I like how they take you back in time and teach you things while you still have a fun book to read.

Olivia
Beechwood Elementary

I would recommend the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan because it is really interesting and it helps you learn about Greek mythology from Percy Jackson’s point of view. Percy is a demigod and he is funny.

Kenzie
Amesbury Middle School, Massachusetts

I recommend Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney because what happens in his life is kind of like mine. The characters are Manny, Rodrick, and Gregory. Greg is my favorite because he is the middle child and I am. There are just so many things I can relate from my life to his.

Levi
Stephens Elementary, Boone County

I would recommend the I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis because the books are so interesting and fun to read. The books have real disasters from history in them, but made-up characters. I find the books very fascinating and fun.
