Summer Learning Loss

June 4, 2025

Summer learning loss, often called the “summer slide” is often discussed in the context of K-12 education, but can also affect adult learners, not just in summer but anytime they face a significant pause in their learning. Finding a combination of strategies that address adult students is critical for both program and student success.

A variety of strategies can foster continuous learning during the summer. Learning can be supported by helping students develop personalized study plans with clear goals and timelines. Students who have continued access during learning breaks to online courses that support varied learning needs, such as KET’s FastForward® and Workplace Essential Skills®, can help maintain consistent study habits.

Additionally, skill-building activities outside of the classroom, such as participating in reading programs or engaging in practices such journal-writing, can enhance comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills, even during a pause in class participation. Incorporating learning into daily routines through activities like listening to educational podcasts or practicing specific skills regularly can make learning a part of everyday life. By fostering an environment of lifelong learning and providing resources and support, adult learners can maintain and continue to build their skills during breaks from formal education.
