Adult Learner Motivation and Recruitment

As schools welcome students of all ages back into the classroom, for adult learners it is essential to understand the motivations driving these individuals to return to continue their education. Many adult learners are motivated by the desire to provide better opportunities for their families by advancing their career and seeking financial stability. They often seek flexible learning options that can accommodate busy schedules, childcare needs or transportation issues.
Programs can highlight common student motivations in their outreach efforts, provide clear, accessible information about adult education programs and emphasize support services available that can help alleviate barriers. There are also many free resources available to assist students in effectively reaching potential students.
Start out with this comprehensive resource list for recruitment strategies from ProLiteracy as well as this detailed workbook from the National Reporting System for Adult Education (NRS). The national organization Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) has recently implemented an initiative in partnership with a professional marketing company to provide programs with individualized support, called Move Ahead with Adult Ed. Additionally, check out free tools and resources from GED® Testing Center and our own KET Adult Education outreach materials.
By understanding and addressing the unique needs of adult learners, education providers can locate, recruit and encourage student enrollment with the goal of supporting learners to achieve their educational and career aspirations.
